Is the Pope Our Model?
What Are You Saying?
In the article, The Pope Stands for All Life, is the author saying that we should be against the death penalty because the Pope is?

Not That
That’s not our perception, though the article is a reprint and we can’t speak for the author. We should clarify that it’s not OUR message; Focus on the Family doesn’t take an official position on capital punishment. But we did think there were other reaons the article was worth reprinting.

What struck us about the story was the pope’s admirable insistence on taking positions he considers consistent, even though they don't make him altogether popular with either of the usual “sides” in these debates. We also were impressed by his willingness to speak truth to power— to stand up in front of a president who supports “abortion rights” and tell him his position is grievously wrong. He shows the same willingness to fly in the face of our culture. That courage is a quality we’d like to see more of among Christians in general, whether Catholic or Protestant.
