It’s Not His Fault

News flash! President Obama did not cause the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. I repeat: It is not the president’s fault!

In light of Matt’s blog about the spill, particularly the lesson on unintended consequences, I think it’s important to point out that our past words — and attitudes — can often come back to haunt us.

So while no sane person would blame the president for causing the spill, a lot of people are starting to blame him for not stopping it. And why not? This is the same man who said, upon winning the nomination to run for president, that “this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.” If you can stop global warming and heal the planet, then stopping a gigantic oil spill 5,000 feet below the waves is child’s play. (On the other hand, his daughter, Malia, can be forgiven for thinking daddy can do anything, as little girls are wont to do.)

If you put yourself on a pedestal, be prepared to fall off — or be knocked off by your own hubris.
