In looking back on his life, celebrated author and entrepreneur Donald Miller describes himself as the consummate actor. In his new book, Scary Close, Don says, “I’d learned my default mode was to perform. Even in small groups I feel like I have to be ‘on.'” But craving true intimacy forced him to eventually drop the act and invest in real relationships. The unsettling process began with therapy, then friends and mentors, and continued with the pursuit of his wife, Betsy. It wasn’t easy, and the learning continues, but Don says it’s worth the wait. Even better, he argues it’s something available to anyone who prioritizes love and vulnerability.
