About Abby DeBenedittis

Abby DeBenedittis is the editor and project manager for Boundless at Focus on the Family. She likes to write about how faith in Jesus Christ intersects with and influences ordinary life and daily routines. After graduating from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, she worked at David C. Cook, editing their adult nonfiction books and a few children’s books too. A fan of Colorado’s 300 days of sun, she’s often out hiking or hammocking, and on the cold, snowy days, she’s usually playing five-hour board games or drinking a white mocha at a local coffee shop.

I bought a house. So of course I’ve been spending a lot of time fixing it up and making it mine. I have three roommates moving in soon, and I’m trying to organize the kitchen so we can efficiently use a small amount of space — especially in the kitchen.

And sometimes that means I buy a silverware organizer at IKEA, only to realize it’s really too small and doesn’t have as many divided spots as I’d like (for some reason, it’s really important to me that my small spoons are separate from my big spoons).

I didn’t know about the school shooting in Florida until a co-worker mentioned it the next morning.

OK, that’s not entirely true. Before falling into bed the previous night, I did see something on social media about a shooting, but I didn’t click to read more. I brushed by it — perhaps partly because of a growing cultural insensitivity to shootings and tragedies, but probably largely because of my preoccupation with my own “hard” life.

And it took my ignorance the next morning for me to realize just how much I’m focused on me.

10. In the very first episode, Lisa opened by saying, “I am contemplating getting a gun.” Turns out this desire was prompted by her confusing a falling picture with a burglar. Because her alarm system didn’t go off, the likely option was that the supposed burglar tunneled in.
